  • About My Art

My art is about exploring the 'family landscape'

It is an 'out pouring' as a response to the recent death of my sister. We had an on/off relationship. She was a difficult person to grow up with. She had a baby at sixteen and I was only six. Our lives crossed now and again, and when it did we clashed. Later in her life we hardly ever spoke and we never became sisters again.

This work exposes the viewer to themes such as estrangement, vulnerability, presence unsettled by absence, grief, longing, fragility and born from living experiences. But it does give a sense of fun, humour, endurance, hope, healing and recovery. I draw mostly with inks using sticks and brushes. I am intuitive and spontaneous with my approach. Inks with water give a dream like quality to the work. My colour work is mixed media with soft and oil pastels and watercolour paints. These materials make the work feel immediate.

My figures are having adventures with animals, birds, nature, water, trees, rivers and each other. I often reference a fairy tale and mention my home town in the landscape. The man is myself, my male side. We are having fun in the landscape, playing with animals, collecting life giving water in pots and wandering the wilderness.

I attended an Experimental Drawing Course with the artist Kate Walters at Newlyn School of Art. And it is on this course I was able to extend my drawing practise by exploring the breath, focussing on my body chakras and sketching the sacred flowers of the land. This course has opened up new bright doors with my drawing now.

    'The Others'

Earlier this year my sister died. We had a difficult relationship.

The drawings here are an 'out pouring' of my deep rooted feelings regarding my family.

I call this series 'The Others'

    Thoughts, musings, and ruminations.

My art practise is about drawing buildings. I am fascinated by them. My work uncovers a sense of nostalgia, memory, time, history, story telling, inheritance, sense of place, loss and decay. I ask myself 'Why do we love buildings?' 'What is a home?' 'Why do we identify with lost places?' ...

For about three years I have been making small sculptures from recycled copper and wood, plaster and concrete, plus a recent exploration into ceramics. I have followed a simple theme of 'On the Edge'. This evolved as I am interested in the idea of communities that are living 'on the edge' of...
